TRAVEL ABROAD TO SPAIN
WITH DARTON COLLEGE
(May 9-21, 2005)

What follows is a detailed description of the program and all costs except your
spending money there. In order to participate, students must be in good
standing. Community members, faculty and staff must be adventurous and
energetic!
This tour, called Spanish Rhapsody, will be coordinated and
conducted by ACIS (American Council for International Studies), a very reputable
educational travel company with which we have traveled a number of times.
WHERE WE'LL GO AND WHAT WE'LL SEE
(ACIS reserves the right to modify the itinerary slightly, but this is pretty
close. We'll get you a new one if it changes.)
Day 1: Depart USA by overnight flight. I hope you packed
your walking shoes!
Day 2: Madrid. Arrive in Madrid. Free time to explore or
enjoy a sidewalk café.
Day 3: Madrid. Today we enjoy the sights of Madrid with a
local guide. We'll visit the Plaza Mayor, scene of bullfights, executions, and
celebrations, and enjoy the treasures of the Prado Museum; Goya, Velázquez, and
some of the old Flemish masters. Free afternoon.
Day 4: Madrid. A day trip to Spain's old capital of Toledo.
The day includes a visit to the Church of Santo Tomé for works by El Greco, a
tour of the Gothic cathedral, and a visit to the medieval synagogue. Lunch is
included today instead of dinner. Return to Madrid in the afternoon and get
ready to roll.
Day 5: Salamanca. Morning drive to the palace-monastery of
El Escorial, built by Spain's king Felipe II in the 16th century and home of the
Royal Pantheon, where almost every Spanish king since Charles V is entombed.
Then on to the Valley of the Fallen, the somber memorial to the million men who
died during the Spanish Civil War. Next, we journey to Segovia, where we will
see the still functioning Roman aqueduct and storybook castle El Alcázar, and to
the walled city of Ávila, home of St. Teresa. We'll end the day in the
university town of Salamanca.
Day 6: Salamanca. Today's tour includes the beautiful Plaza
Mayor with its arcaded buildings and new cathedral, and a visit to the 13th
century university, the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe.
Day 7: Sevilla. Travel southward through lush valleys and
orange orchards, olive groves and sunflower fields. We'll stop at the ancient
city of Mérida, which has more Roman ruins than any other in Spain. Then we
continue to Sevilla in the heart of Andalucía.
Day 8: Sevilla. Our sightseeing in Sevilla includes the
immense and impressive Gothic cathedral, home to the tomb of Christopher
Columbus, and the Moorish Giralda Tower. We'll also visit the Moorish
fortress/palace, the Alcázar, and later have time for a stroll through the old
Jewish quarter Santa Cruz or a horse and buggy ride. This evening there is an
evening of flamenco included.
Day 9: Granada. Say adiós to Sevilla as we travel to
Córdoba. Roman and Moorish influences are seen in the long arched bridge and the
Mezquita, the colorful mosque of this former Moorish capital of Spain. We'll
continue to Granada, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada.
Day 10: Overnight train. Our morning sightseeing of
Granada, the last Moorish stronghold in Europe, will take us to the exotic and
romantic Alhambra Palace and fragrant Generalife Gardens. Tonight we board an
overnight train to Barcelona.
Day 11: Barcelona. Wake up in Gaudí's city of Barcelona! On
the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona is Spain's second most important city. Here
we will visit the Gothic quarter, the Cathedral, the Pueblo Español, and get a
view of Gaudís Sagrada Familia.
Day 12: Barcelona. This morning we will go to the sacred
mountain of Montserrat for a visit to the Basilica and the Black Madonna. This
afternoon is free for last minute shopping and packing for home.
Day 13: Departure for the USA with memories for a lifetime!
WHAT WILL IT COST?
Please read carefully all of the Terms and Conditions in the Registration
Booklet for details of all regulations, fees and late fees, payment schedules
and deadlines, coverages, and allowances. What follows is a brief outline.

ACIS Membership Fee
$95
- Non-refundable; includes Basic Protection Plan (described in Registration Booklet)

Program Fee by November 1, 2004 $2799
- Departure from Atlanta
- $400 toward this amount must be paid within 60 days of registration or by Aug. 31, 2004, whichever comes first. Final balance payment must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 2005 (see payment schedule in Registration Booklet).
- Includes roundtrip airfare from Atlanta; all breakfasts and dinners (unless otherwise stated); courier service, admission to included attractions, accommodation in double, triple or quadruple rooms.
Weekend Departure Fee $45
- Since our travel dates begin on a weekend (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday).
- Pay with the balance.
Adult Surcharge (13 day trip, 10 overnights) $60 plus $30/night = ($360)
- Required of participants age 24 and over.
- Guarantees double room in hotel accommodations (single room guaranteed at higher rate per night).
- Covers higher entrance fees and travel costs for adults.
